The Godfrey Brothers: Matthew, David and Jordan are The Michael Jazz Trio.  And the Trio grooves with the subtle finesse required to make jazz alluring in all of its incarnations.

The Godfrey Brothers hail from Central Islip, on the South Side of Long Island.  If you become introduced to The Michael Jazz Trio through their music, you could be stunned when checking out their bios.  Oldest brother Matthew, and keyboardist, is 16 years old.  Sax player, David, is 14 years old and Jordan, 9 years old, is keeping the beat on the drums. These young gents look to have a long and storied career ahead of them.

The Michael Jazz Trio’s musical roots come from the great jazz family of familiars like Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.  But there are deeper family roots in their music.  Jordan’s cousin, Michael Graham, gave his drum set to Jordan to help further his career and keep the family energy alive.  And there is serious inspirational nostalgia in David’s saxophone.  Ms. Godfrey’s grandfather, William Wright, originally played this horn.  With their natural talent, and the family inspiration of the past and present, these guys have no place to go but up.

Like most great musicians, The Michael Jazz Trio began their stage career from humble beginnings.  Most musicians of their age are debuting in living rooms and backyard barbeques.  But The Godfrey’s realized their sons had talent that should be experienced.  They asked a local convenience store owner if the guys could use the 7-Eleven location as their outdoor venue.  The MJT was an instant hit and they took their show on the road to play other venues around the community.   Since then, they have also played the Apollo Theater, City of New York Correctional Department Annual Fund Raiser, The Long Island Breast Cancer Cabaret Showcase and numerous other venues.

As mentioned above, The Michael Jazz Trio’s music has its own delicious magic.  “Helena’s Blues” and “Sunset” are hypnotic, sustained rhythms that lay the bed for sax riffs speaking in tasty, melodic tongues ever so smooth.  MJT goes up tempo, and toes start tapping, with “MG” and “Mom’s Expression.”  And a dash of brash is sprinkled on the upbeat of “Diana.”  We get the feeling the tune is looking over its shoulder at us, giving us a wink and a slight smile, cause we’re hooked on the beat and we’re going to follow where “Diana” takes us.

The Michael Jazz Trio stands shoulder to shoulder (figuratively, if not literally) with exceptional jazz artists.  The musical sway of sensual, seductive rhythms and the masterful moderation of upbeat tempos make us comfortable to surrender our sensibilities to The Michael Jazz Trio.  We’re pleased to share this experience with you.
